Panic attacks can feel terrifying. They often appear suddenly, even when everything seems fine, and bring intense physical sensations such as a racing heart, chest tightness, dizziness, shortness of breath, shaking, sweating, or a feeling of “going crazy.”  Many people even end up in the ER because they think they are having a heart attack. Many people describe panic attacks as feeling like they’re losing control, having a heart attack, or that something terrible is about to happen.

After experiencing a panic attack, you might start worrying constantly about having another one. This fear can lead you to avoid places or situations where panic has happened before: driving, crowded stores, meetings, airplanes, or even being far from home. Some people begin withdrawing from everyday activities to avoid triggering symptoms, which can significantly limit their lives.

The fear of panic can feel just as overwhelming as the panic itself. Over time, you may feel frustrated, ashamed, or exhausted by trying to manage symptoms you don’t fully understand.

But here’s the good news: panic attacks are treatable, and you can learn how to regain control, reduce symptoms, and feel safe in your body again.

I provide panic disorder therapy both in-person at my Bergen County area office or virtually!

You Don’t Have to Live in Fear of the Next Panic Attack

Panic disorder affects millions of people each year. In the United States, approximately 2.7% of adults experience panic disorder annually according to the National Institute of Mental Health. An estimated 4.7% of U.S. adults will experience panic disorder at some point in their lives. Panic Disorder — NIMH statistics and prevalence data

Panic Disorder Can Be Overcome: Proven Strategies for Real Change

Mindfulness Based Techniques

Mindfulness techniques teach individuals to gently shift their attention away from worry and toward the present moment. Instead of getting pulled into “what-ifs” or racing thoughts, mindfulness helps people notice their feelings and physical sensations with curiosity rather than fear. Over time, this reduces the intensity of anxious reactions.

Through practices such as deep breathing, grounding exercises, and guided awareness, mindfulness activates the body’s natural calming response. For many people, mindfulness becomes a practical, everyday tool.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps identify unhelpful thoughts and beliefs and replace them with more balanced, realistic ways of thinking. You also learn behavior strategies that reinforce healthier patterns.

CBT teaches you to challenge distorted beliefs.  For example, like overestimating danger or feeling overly responsible. As thoughts shift, compulsive behaviors often decrease because they feel less necessary.

CBT strengthens your ability to understand and change the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This gives you tools to manage OCD long-term.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT teaches you to notice and accept intrusive thoughts and feelings without fighting them. Instead of trying to eliminate discomfort, you learn to make room for it and choose actions aligned with your values.

ACT reduces the struggle with intrusive thoughts by helping you see them as mental events opposed to threats. This lowers the urge to perform compulsions and increases flexibility in how you respond.

ACT helps you build a life guided by personal values rather than fear or avoidance. As your focus shifts toward meaningful action, OCD has less influence over your daily choices.

All of these modalities are known to help people who suffer from panic disorder.  In therapy, I blend all of three of these together throughout your journey to help you overcome your symptoms of panic disorder and help you to live a calmer life with more clarity.

How Panic Disorder Therapy at Anew Counseling Services Can Help

What You Can Expect in Sessions

To start, we will do an intake and go over your entire history.  Then we will focus on the panic including how symptoms began, what triggers you, and how it affects your daily life.

Next, we’ll work together to develop a personalized treatment plan that will help you respond differently to panic and anxiety. This may include:

  • Learning how to interrupt early signs of panic

  • Practicing calming strategies that re-train your breathing and nervous system

  • Engaging in supportive, gradual exposure practices to reduce fear of bodily sensations

  • Slowly increasing activities in life with the tools you need to combat a panic attack if it happens

Over time, my goal is for you to feel calmer in situations that used  to feel threatening, and the fear of panic decreases significantly.

Why This Approach Works

Panic disorder persists because the brain learns to interpret normal bodily sensations as dangerous. Over time, the fear of panic becomes the trigger for panic.

Therapy works by breaking this cycle:

  • Understanding panic reduces the fear of “what’s happening.”
  • Challenging catastrophic thinking reduces fear of bodily sensations.
  • Exposure teaches your brain that these sensations are uncomfortable but not dangerous
  • Coping skills help calm the nervous system and prevent escalation.

With consistent practice, you can retrain your brain to feel safer, calmer, and more grounded.
