Break OCD’s Cycle and Reclaim Your Life With Specialized Therapy
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a mental health condition that causes unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and urges to perform rituals or routines (compulsions).
OCD has common themes including:
- Violent or Sexual intrusive thoughts
- Contamination Fears (germs and sickness)
- Harm Obsessions (constant worry that you will hurt someone or yourself)
- Symmetry or Ordering (needing objects in a specific order)
- Perfectionism/Just Right (need for symmetry, exactness, or things feeling perfect)
Approximately 1.2% of adults have OCD in any given year. National Institute of Mental Health
And about 2.3% of adults will meet diagnostic criteria for OCD at some point in their lives. National Institute of Mental Health
Signs of OCD will usually show during childhood and are often misdiagnosed. Without treatment, it can become harder to deal with and function in daily life. But the good news is that with structured treatment, your symptoms can become much more manageable.
At Anew Counseling Services, I use evidence-based techniques that are the best known to help get your OCD under control.
How OCD Therapy at Anew Counseling Services Can Help
Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP works by helping you gradually face the thoughts, images, or situations that trigger your anxiety while resisting the urge to do compulsions. Over time, your brain learns that the feared outcome doesn’t happen and the anxiety naturally drops.
By reducing compulsions, ERP breaks the OCD cycle. This helps your brain become less reactive to intrusive thoughts, leading to more confidence, less fear, and more freedom in daily life.
ERP teaches you that anxiety can rise and fall on its own without rituals. This reduces OCD’s power and increases your ability to choose behaviors based on values rather than fear.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps identify unhelpful thoughts and beliefs and replace them with more balanced, realistic ways of thinking. You also learn behavior strategies that reinforce healthier patterns.
CBT teaches you to challenge distorted beliefs. For example, like overestimating danger or feeling overly responsible. As thoughts shift, compulsive behaviors often decrease because they feel less necessary.
CBT strengthens your ability to understand and change the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This gives you tools to manage OCD long-term.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT teaches you to notice and accept intrusive thoughts and feelings without fighting them. Instead of trying to eliminate discomfort, you learn to make room for it and choose actions aligned with your values.
ACT reduces the struggle with intrusive thoughts by helping you see them as mental events opposed to threats. This lowers the urge to perform compulsions and increases flexibility in how you respond.
ACT helps you build a life guided by personal values rather than fear or avoidance. As your focus shifts toward meaningful action, OCD has less influence over your daily choices.
All of these modalities are known to help people who suffer from OCD. In therapy, I blend all of three of these together throughout your journey to help you overcome your symptoms of OCD and regain control of your life!
Compassionate, Collaborative, & Structured OCD Therapy
What You Can Expect in Sessions
Our first session (intake session) we will go over your entire history. From there we will focus specifically on your OCD and learn more about your triggers, themes, obsessions, and compulsions. We’ll talk about how OCD has impacted your daily life and the goals you want to move toward.
As therapy progresses, I’ll help you:
- Psychoeducation about OCD and the treatment process
- Identify your specific obsessions and compulsions
- Practice structured ERP exercises, customized to your comfort level
- Build tolerance for uncertainty and discomfort
- Reduce fear and confidence in managing your OCD symptoms
ERP is never about forcing you into overwhelming situations. Instead, we move step by step — always collaboratively, always at a pace that feels manageable. You are in control of the process, and I provide the guidance, structure, and reassurance needed to make steady, lasting progress.
Why This Approach Works
Intrusive thoughts lose their power when you learn not to respond with compulsions. Over time, your brain adapts, anxiety decreases, and the fear attached to the thoughts fades. This process is both highly effective and incredibly empowering. You will learn that you can tolerate uncertainty and that thoughts don’t define you.

I’ve seen clients make remarkable progress which is one of the best and most rewarding parts of my job. And I know that with commitment, guidance, and compassion, you can make that same progress too. My role is to help you feel understood, supported, and empowered as you learn new skills and reclaim your life from OCD.
Common Questions About OCD Therapy
What if talking about my intrusive thoughts makes them worse?
This is a very common worry and understandably so. Intrusive thoughts can be very scary and make us extremely anxious. But, talking openly about your intrusive thoughts, without judgment or fear, is one of the most healing parts of OCD therapy. We will go at your pace to make sure you always feel comfortable. As you learn how OCD works, you’ll start to see your thoughts differently and feel less threatened by them.
I’ve tried managing my symptoms on my own. What if therapy doesn’t help?
Many people spend years trying to “figure out” OCD before seeking help. Many spend years thinking it is anything but OCD. But OCD isn’t a problem that can be solved through logic or willpower alone. It’s a brain-based cycle that requires specific tools. ERP is highly effective, and most clients experience significant improvement when they actively engage in the process.
What if ERP is too intense or overwhelming?
ERP can sound scary. It is basically making you face your fears… But when used in therapy with support, it is not scary. It is actually a collaborate and compassionate process. When we begin, we start with something that may only cause a little bit of fear or anxiety and then work our way up. And we will discuss all exposures and explore your comfort level together. You stay in control, and we always move at your pace. Most clients find that ERP feels empowering and has helped them tremendously.
